The former slave who turned an uprising into an army disciplined enough to beat European powers. He was arrested by French forces in 1802 and died in a French prison, months before the victory he made possible.

JEAN-JACQUES DESSALINES — Father of Liberty
Born enslaved in 1758. Commanded the indigenous army to victory at Vertières on 18 November 1803, and stood at Gonaïves on 1 January 1804 to declare Haiti free — the first Black sovereign state in the Americas.

SANITÉ BÉLAIR — Lieutenant of Liberty
Sergeant, then lieutenant in Toussaint’s army; her comrades called her the Tigress. Sentenced to beheading because she was a woman, she demanded a soldier’s death instead, refused a blindfold, and shouted “Viv libèté! A ba esclavaj!” — Long live freedom! Down with slavery!

Two men who led the revolution, and a woman who fought inside it as a ranking officer and faced a firing squad on her own terms.
