Marie-Jeanne Lamartinière Challenge Coin
GUARDIAN OF FREEDOM
She held the ramparts while the fort burned around her.
In March 1802, Napoleon's expedition laid siege to the fort at Crête-à-Pierrot. Among its defenders was Marie-Jeanne Lamartinière, soldier of the revolution, fighting beside her husband, Brigade Commander Louis Daure Lamartinière.
The French general Lacroix recorded what he saw from his own lines: a woman on the ramparts, dressed in a Mamluk-style uniform with a rifle slung over her shoulder and a cutlass at her steel belt, moving from one end of the fortress to the other under a rain of projectiles — distributing cartridges, helping load the cannons, urging her brothers in arms to keep fighting.
On the night of March 24, with the fort exhausted, the defenders fought their way through more than 10,000 French troops and escaped. That night won Marie-Jeanne Lamartinière her name among the heroes of Haitian independence. She fought on at Vertières the following year, and in 1954 Haiti honored her on a postage stamp for the 150th anniversary of independence.
This commemorative coin was created to preserve that legacy in a collectible you can hold, display, gift, and pass to future generations.
