Lieutenant Sanité Bélair Haitian Heroes Challenge Coin

LIEUTENANT OF LIBERTY

Suzanne Bélair — called Sanité — rose from sergeant to lieutenant in Toussaint Louverture’s army. Her comrades called her the Tigress. In August 1802 she fought in the mountains above Verrettes against the Napoleonic expedition sent to restore slavery.

Captured that autumn, she was sentenced to be beheaded because she was a woman. She refused. She demanded a soldier’s death by musket, and got it. She would not be blindfolded. Standing in front of the barrels she shouted “Viv libèté! A ba esclavaj!” — Long live freedom! Down with slavery! She was roughly twenty-one years old.

She is remembered as one of the four great heroines of Haitian independence, alongside Catherine Flon, Cécile Fatiman, and Dédée Bazile.
